zona mediante decreto.

 

Luego de casi diez años de haber iniciado el proceso para convertir a la Estrella Fluvial de Inírida en una zona protegida y de interés mundial, el Presidente Juan Manuel Santos firmó el decreto por el cual, las 253 mil hectáreas que conforman este ecosistema, fueron declaradas humedal Ramsar, calificación internacional que busca la conservación y el uso racional de los recursos hídricos, mediante acciones locales, regionales, nacionales e internacionales. Esto permitó a Colombia tener el sexto humedal de este tipo.

 
El Presidente, afirmó que la inclusión de la Estrella Fluvial de Inírida, como sitio Ramsar, es uno de los grandes logros del Gobierno Nacional en materia ambiental. “Los humedales son fuentes de agua, son el hábitat de especies únicas, y también el territorio de comunidades indígenas. Esta es una de las zonas más ricas que tenemos en el país, que tiene el mundo.

 
Preservar el agua es una prioridad, este es un humedal, muy importante especialmente, por la cantidad de agua que tiene”, agregó el mandatario. La firma del decreto se dio luego de que se dilatara el proceso por diferencias entre los ministerios de Minas y Ambiente, ya que se trata de un territorio altamente potencial para la minería en el país.
 

Por ello, el Presidente Santos pidió conformar mesas de trabajo por parte de dichos ministerios con los mineros de la región, para implementar otras formas de sostenimiento que no afecten el medio ambiente, impulsando actividades encaminadas al ecoturismo y a la pesca sostenible. Del mismo modo, con estas mesas de trabajo, se busca el respeto por las minorías y las comunidades que allí existen, ya que además de ser una región con múltiples resguardos indígenas, el Guainía se caracteriza por tener en su territorio cerca de 40 comunidades de los pueblos Piunave y Curripaco.
 

Por otra parte, en cuanto a la fauna y la flora, existen más de 400 especies de peces y cerca de 900 variedades de plantas, e incluye varios humedales desde los cerros de Mavicure, en las márgenes del río Inírida, hasta la desembocadura del Caño Jota en el río Orinoco.

 
Finalmente, el Presidente recordó que nuestro país ocupa el primer lugar en el mundo en diversidad de aves, y esta zona tiene el 25 por ciento de estas especies en el país. “Colombia ocupa el segundo lugar en todo el planeta en peces de agua dulce, y en esta Estrella Fluvial del Inírida, se encuentra el 35 por ciento de la riqueza de especies de este tipo” afirmó.
 

Cabe destacar que los otros cinco ecosistemas que se han declarado en el país como humedales Ramsar son: el sistema Delta Estuario del Río Magdalena, La Laguna de la Cocha en el Departamento de Nariño, el Delta del Río Baudó, los Humedales Laguna del Otún y el Sistema Lacustre de Chingaza.
