El director de la Subdivisión de Consumo y Producción Sostenible del PNUMA (Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente), Arab Hoballah fue uno de los invitados en los diálogos de Alto Nivel de Río +20, por su papel en temas de consumismo y lo que ello representa para el futuro de las sociedades en las grandes ciudades.
 

El mensaje principal del PNUMA es que si existe voluntad, se pueden hacer muchas cosas, pero si no la hay, se debe preparar a la sociedad para que convenza a sus líderes que se puede hacer mucho para salvar el planeta, ya que cada ciudadano tiene un papel importante en ese sentido.

 
Según Hoballah: “Se están perdiendo recursos como el agua, la energía y lo que consumimos. Tenemos que cambiar eso, y la respuesta es ahorrar recursos, solo debemos saber cómo hacerlo; tener la información, la capacidad de hacer eso, porque no es un problema de una persona, ni de una ciudad.

 
Se necesita que todos los sectores tanto privado como público, las alcaldías junto con el Gobierno, unan esfuerzos para sacar adelante un futuro sustentable”, agregó.

 
Así mismo, el funcionario comentó como desde la oficina de Naciones Unidas y en su vida personal, se ha convertido en un actor para hacer parte del cambio en perspectiva de un futuro sostenible. “En Paris, ciudad en la que vivo, nunca uso el carro, siempre me movilizo en metro, en transporte público; mi hijo usa su bicicleta para ir al trabajo; en mi casa separo los desechos para el reciclaje”.

 
Incluso, en todas las oficinas de Naciones Unidas, tenemos un programa para cooperar con el ambiente, uno de ellos es el SUN (Sustainable United Nations), programa de Naciones Unidas Sustentable.

 
En la organización usamos papel reciclado y contribuimos al ahorro de energía con la utilización de bombillos ahorradores y seguiremos haciendo cambios en pro de un futuro mejor.

Además dio a conocer que se están apoyando a las oficinas de Naciones Unidas de cada país y a los gobiernos, con programas de edificación sustentable, para convencer a las personas de los malos manejos que se hacen en relación con el ambiente. El mensaje principal es que la sociedad está perdiendo recursos y dineros que se pueden invertir en salud, educación y, de esta manera, ir hacia adelante con la sostenibilidad.
 

En términos de patrones de consumo, Hoballah no hace diferencia entre clases sociales: “Tenemos una oportunidad para cada uno, de mejorar la utilización de los recursos e ir adelante, sin importar el color político. El mensaje para la sociedad es consumir diferente, el rico consume menos porque puede consumir menos, mientras que mantenga su nivel de vida; el pobre puede consumir de manera diferente”.

 
Por ejemplo, alguien en Europa o Estados Unidos puede consumir 500 litros de agua, si ahorra 100 litros, no va a hacer diferencia en su vida, pero si en el planeta. Un pobre que consume 50 litros, si ahorra 10, hará mucha diferencia en su vida, porque podrá invertir más en las cosas de primera necesidad. El punto es consumir de manera más responsable, concluyó.
